Cleaning up visible soot doesn't always get rid of the smell. Smoke odor is caused by microscopic particles that work into the same cracks, wall cavities, carpet padding, and HVAC ductwork that smoke itself traveled through, and wiping down hard surfaces does nothing for odor trapped in those hidden spaces. When a home or business has been cleaned but still smells like smoke days or weeks later, that's usually the sign this step got skipped.
Thermal fogging is our standard method for reaching odor that surface cleaning can't: a deodorizing solution is vaporized into a fine, heated fog that travels through the air and settles into the same paths the original smoke took, neutralizing odor-causing particles at the molecular level rather than just masking the smell. For more severe or widespread odor, we follow with ozone or hydroxyl treatment using equipment that meets California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification standards for indoor ozone-generating devices, since ozone above certain concentrations is a respiratory irritant and the space has to be vacated and ventilated on a specific schedule around the treatment.
We choose between ozone and hydroxyl generators based on whether the space can be vacated during treatment and how quickly you need to reoccupy it, and we treat HVAC ductwork as part of the same job when smoke odor has recirculated through the system โ because unaddressed ducts are one of the most common reasons odor keeps coming back after every other part of a fire cleanup looks finished.
